Surprisingly, one of the biggest and best annual motorcycle shows, Born Free, is only hitting its tenth anniversary this year. Taking place in the mountains of Orange County, CA, at a cross between a kids summer camp and a KOA, there is plenty of room for people and motorcycles, and few neighbors to upset with your loud pipes.
That is just one part of one of the bike parking lots and at the end of the day when many people had already left! Without a drone, it is impossible to get a real picture of just how many bikes were there.… Read the rest
America knows and loves Clymer for their manuals that keep motorcycles and ATVs running right, but did you know we also have a marine division to keep your outboard motor purring and your PWC jetting? Our sterndrive and inboard motor manuals basically cover everything but the hull and the head for your powerboat or cabin cruiser. A boat is probably the second biggest purchase you are ever going to make, below the cost of your house and often above your car. Unfortunately, a boat is likely the most maintenance intensive possession you are ever likely to own (unless you also own horses), and to protect your investment you need to take care of it before and after every outing.… Read the rest
Father’s Day is coming which has us thinking about our dads and the projects we did together that got us into all things mechanical back when we were kids. If you have been looking for a way to spend time with the kids and teach them valuable skills while having fun, there is nothing better than tackling a kid-sized motor vehicle with them, whether mini bike, go-kart, or pit bike.
The simplest is the traditional mini bike, typically just a bent tube frame, a rub block for a brake, and no suspension. Go-karts are the next rung up the ladder, and in their purest form are just four wheeled mini bikes, rub brakes and all, but can get much more complicated and faster.… Read the rest
As I type this, the great Travis Pastrana and his Nitro Circus crew are at an undisclosed location in Southern California. They are running practice drills and jumps for his live three hour TV special coming up on July 8th from Vegas called “Evel Live“. Pastrana will recreate three of the iconic jumps that Evel Knievel did in his prime, including one that nearly killed him. A few of these stunts have been recreated before, but never on a heavy flat track bike like the one Evel originally rode.
Pastrana has just the bike, The Indian Scout based FTR750 which is similar in many respects to the Harley-Davidson Sportster based XR750 that Knievel did most of his jumps on, including weight and (limited) suspension travel.… Read the rest
The Congregation Show, only in its second year, is quickly rivaling the likes of Austin’s Handbuilt Show, The One Show in Portland, OR, and LA’s Outlier’s Guild Moto Show. Hosted by DICE Magazine, Harley-Davidson and operated by the boys of Prism Supply, this vintage motorcycle show features a variety of talented custom builders from around the country.
This year’s show saw over 5,000 attendees, 120 motorcycles, 25 hot rods and over 40 vendors. One of our favorite parts of the show is the venue: Camp North End. It’s a former Ford Model T assembly plant, across an alleyway from Prism Supply’s shop in Charlotte, North Carolina.… Read the rest

Southern California is one of the largest motorcycle markets in the country, even without the northern half of the state, so it has its fair share of motorcycle events over the course of the year. Not only are there plenty of enthusiasts to attend, the vast majority of motorcycle aftermarket companies are all within 150 miles of Los Angeles, and most of the big Japanese motorcycle manufacturers are headquartered there. One of the newest and hippest shows, returning for just the second year in 2018, is the Outlier’s Guild Motorcycle Show, aka the OG Motoshow.
The show is set up in a large space in the downtown L.A.… Read the rest

In case you have been snowed in all winter, you are in for a shock when you get to your local Harley-Davidson dealer when the roads clear come spring.
For the motorcycle company that has defined the American motorcycle for over a century, how do you blend modern technology and the timeless style of the Harley-Davidson? In an effort to stay relevant in the 21st-century, this year brings all new big twin cruisers, with an all new frame, and the Milwaukee Eight motor first seen in the touring line.
Chief Engineer Ben Wright describes trying to walk the tight rope of tradition and modernity as downright “scary.” “The new Softail models are the result of the most extensive research and development program in the company’s history,” said Paul James, manager of product portfolio, Harley-Davidson.… Read the rest
