1972 Scat-Cat “Tom” Model-SC114 Mini Bike – 2013 HoAME Show 2nd Best Mini

Back in the 1960s and 1970s, there were literally dozens of companies making minibikes powered by Tecumseh and Briggs & Stratton small engines, like this Scat-Cat SC114. Clymer caught this particularly nice example at the 2013 Heart of America Motorcycle Enthusiasts vintage motorcycle rally, where it won second place in the mini category.

Clymer Girl and the crew didn’t have to go far to attend the HoAME show and rally, as it was just up the road at the Kansas City Airline History Museum in the Downtown Airport. The show was packed with classic vintage and antique motorcycles including British, German, Japanese, Italian, and American makes, all on display. Manufacturers represented include Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, BMW, Harley Davidson, Vincent, Triumph, BSA, Norton, Brough Superior, Indian, Cushman, Vespa, Laverda, Puch, Lambretta, MV Augusta, Ducati, Matchless, Zundapp, Moto Guzzi, AJS and more. There were 100% perfect restorations, well worn bikes daily riders, full-on customs, cafe racers, choppers, bobbers, dirt bikes, road racers – any type or style of motorcycle you could image. Also on display were vintage propeller driven passenger planes, including a Douglas DC-3, a Martin 404, and right outside the hangar was a 1958 Lockheed Super Constellation.

Scat-cat mini bikes were sold via a distributor in Kansas City, with American made motors, and the bulk of the bike made in Taiwan by Cheng Shin and others, depending on model. Many minibikes had no suspension and brakes via a rub block on the rear tire, and many were home built from plans in magazines like Popular Mechanics and Boys Life. Scat-Cat bikes for the most part were of a higher quality, with sprung suspension, drum brakes (often on both wheels), and spoked wheels. Power was via 4 or 5 horsepower motor, sometimes hooked to a Comet torque converter CVT transmission.

You may think nobody, not even Clymer, makes a manual to help maintain these bikes, but you would be wrong. The Clymer small engine line includes a Tecumseh L-head Engine manual, and a Small Air-Cooled Engine manual which cover them, plus a Briggs & Stratton Engine specific manual as well.
